Check-Up?

If an annual physical check-up is encouraged by doctors even when people are not ill, why should an annual mental check-up also not be encouraged, even when people are not "crazy"?

'Coz then all of the world will proved to be "ill" .Isn't there a bit of madness and craziness in each one of us?

I guess the craziness(if it can be called tht) gets recognised only in a few, the rest of us manage to hide it well!

@ Knatchbulley hughzscene, thank you for saying that! Most of us are in denial about the importance of mental health.

@ Veens, haha! I used the term "crazy" only to represent what laymen think about the kind of people who go to shrinks. In reality, people actually do go also because they are stressed out and just need someone to teach them to calm down. So yes, I agree with you. A check of anxiety, depression, stress levels will be a good thing if people open up to it!

@ Pavi, I do not think the world will be proved "ill" just because they start going for a mental check-up. If so, the same would happen after the physical check-ups right? I think its a good idea just to make sure that something is caught much in advance, if it truly exists, and have early interventions, rather than wait until there is a huge blow-up and then not be treated at all.

Thank you for saying that most of us hide our craziness well. It is very few people that I come across who will admit that everyone has their own neurosis and that that is absolutely normal!

i think it should be a mandate! i also think people shud be given gift vouchers *with a 2 year validity* for a visit with the shrink at their wedding. will help more than dinner sets! :D

i so damn agree with you. but in this case, people are never sane. :D

Haha that would ensure you don't have to worry about finding work.

I personally think they get intimidated by the word shrink. hahaha... they are scared that they can read their mind...Oooo !

Its like opening a book and giving page numbers of your life chapter ! Believe it or not its scary for me too... But then I am afraid to go Doctors for physical examination as well!

You really come up with Moot Questions =) but worthwhile ones !

@ Rayshma, haha! It sounds funny but in churches they actually ask a couple to go through premarital counseling (whether or not they need it) to ensure that both are prepared for this huge life-changing event. Your suggestion makes perfect sense!

@ Ghost particle, I think if this truly happened, some people will take out a morcha to protest!

Solitaire said...

@ Deepali, you bet!

@ Neetal, you just spoke my mind. People always ask me crazy questions, "can you read my mind", "am I crazy" blah blah! I think I am going to write a post on the plight of psychologists in a few days.

I dont have to get a check up....I know I am over the edge - was actually seeking Mental Insurance instead of Dental....

and yeah I wld love to read the madness that patients have towards psychos....will surely follow it up wid a post of mine - with people looking for a mansion in a small teeny weeny plot :)

if u do this..it meant...u r already crazy......

Solitaire said...

@ Ceedy, you want a post on madness? I can shell out a lot many of those!

@ KP, how about secret check-ups?

Hmm....Perhaps yes...We must have it !!! A mental check up !!! And now the question comes how often?? Definitley not annual...I think it must be made more often...Weekly coz the thught process changes much more faster !!!

You're right - an annual mental check-up is necessary when there's so much of stress and pressure.

However, people have a weird notion about mental health. Any person going to the psychologist/psychiatrist appears 'mad' to them.

"Crazy" people, them.

ya ...good point....
but is a yearly visit to the shrink necessary? I don't like shrinks.

Solitaire said...

@ Vitruvian, we always were susceptible. Only that shrinks were not available to make us aware of that fact and we blamed it on "atma ghus gayi hai"!

@ Zahid, WOW! Here there are people who are opposing even the once a year check-up and you want it weekly!

@ Clouds, I agree! Crazy people!

@ The keeper, you don't like me? :(

I think if it were mandated that everyone had a yearly, mental health check up, we might have less serial killers and pedophiles on our hands. And, they would not be able to get away with the "Not Guilty" verdict for "reason of mental disease or defect".

Pavi!!!! said...

A physical check-up is suggested but not mandated.. rite? n its the doc's duty/responsibility to keep his patients ailments a secret. It cannot be disclosed to any1...is my understanding.

I figured..the same rules should apply for a mental check-up

Solitaire said...

@ Pavi, your understanding is correct! Psychologists have very strict rules of confidentiality that they need to follow according to the ethical guidelines.

Maybe because you can be ill physically and not have it show on the person, and it would take much less to 'show' iif one is mentally ill :)

lolz :D so funny sneha di :D i guess i should go for one right away

I think that more than a "mental checkup", people should be asked to take a "venting session" annually. To get everything out of their systems and start fresh. Scream, kick, cry, whatever, get it out and over with. Everyone has so much pent up stress, and that is what usually causes the real mental illness. So this would be some thing like a "prevention" mechanism.

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi, maybe then we would have more shrinks around just like the truckloads of engineers being produced every year by universities.

@ Anil, I am sorry but I do not understand. Rephrase?

@ Nightingale, thank you. Keep coming back.

@ divya, did you?

@ aneri, maybe we can add a venting session to the check up?
