n yup...Mahatma Gandhi has done plenty of good for the nation and some people believe that some of his decisions are the cause for some problems that India is facing till date... Its another arguable topic...Don't want to take the humor away from this post by talking about it!
By family I meant every person in India. Now, considering that our family in general suffered from extreme lack of self respect, depression and a lack of brotherhood, it was easy for the British to rule us.
Gandhiji understood our problems, which we werent fully capable of doing ourselves. He explained them to us and then provided solutions to them. This we used to fight the British. I think that this is similar to what a psychologist does. Also, he revived ancient philosophy, added some of his own, gave it to us and hence gave us an image.
Yup, it's sometimes surprising to me to see Mr. Gandhi being blamed for the problems in today's India. Yes, he had his own limitations. But people will find a scapegoat rather than accepting their own faults.
As to your original question, I think it's confusing "country" and "nation" here. When people say "Bharat Mata" they mean the soil of the country which was responsible for their birth. While "Father of the Nation" refers to the Nation, that is the independent republic entity (as in people and their laws) that was formed after the British left.

This might sound extremely cliched, but I think it makes sense: Gandhiji married his principles, which were strong enough.
