Food

What is the weirdest food combination you have ever tried?

While you are at it, check out my latest food-related post on Warm Fuzzies.

Papaya shake topped with Nimbu Pani.

Mango slices sandwiched in bread (I discovered they beat mango jam big time)

And the one that 'takes the cake' is....

Maggi Masala cooked in milk instead of water! (Yes I cooked such a monstrosity somewhere in class 9)

Solitaire said...

Stupiddddddddddd,

How can you do this to Maggi? That is my staple diet! EWWWWWWWWW! How did it taste?

Stupidosaur said...

You answered it before asking the question :)

Stupidosaur said...

So what do they call equivalent of maggi masala in US?

rayshma said...

:: pork with rasam. or maybe it was sambhar... not sure.. will ask vin what it was! :D
:: poha chicken/chhole chicken.

Solitaire said...

@ Stupid,

EEEKSS!! They had once come out with Maggi SWEET flavor and it was HORRIBLE!!!

Maggi Masala in the US is sold as Maggi Masala in the Indian store? What else did you think?

As for the other grocery stores, they do have RAMEN NOODLES all sold for 10 cents a pack! :)

Stupidosaur said...

Mixed fruit Jam mixed with raw sprouted moong (what do they call this in english?)

Solitaire said...

@ Rayshma,

How odd!! How did you think of such a combination?

Solitaire said...

@ Stupid,

Bean sprouts!?

rayshma said...

vin thought of it. and made it also. i merely ate! :D

Stupidosaur said...

Yeah sweet maggi was started even in India.was yuck. Only in Indian stores there? Nestle does not properly have maggi noodles in US?

Anyways I too was a maggi regular, with working mom and all that, but stopped eating Maggi long back after they 'changed' the Maggi.

In recent years they came back saying "The same old maggi is back!"

But I still did not like it after tasting this new 'old' one. Maybe nostaligia phenomenon (hamare zamane mein syndrome) makes me think it was lot better then , even though they might have really started it making it the same).

Have not had maggi in 7 years (except once in college nestle counter with a friend)

Solitaire said...

@ Stupid,

I cannot imagine life without Maggi. I eat it at least twice a week if not more. I don't remember what the old maggi tastes like. But I miss the "Sweet and Sour" flavor!

I don't experiment much with Maggi but I have once had Maggi between bread slices...

Solitaire said...

@ Comfortably numb,

Chana as in chick peas?

Damn! How did it taste? Sweet or spicy?

Saim said...

tasted nice actually........bit of both sweet n spicy:D

APOO said...

Chappati with rice.

Solitaire said...

@ Apoo,

Surely you have eaten at Chipotle..Rice in a chapati is called Burrito there!!

Kanan said...

Just to name a few:

Cereal with juice
Banana with rajma (yup, there's a restaurant that serves this)
Kadhi with dhokla
Parle-G biscuits sprayed with water :D (yummm)
Bread crumbs ice-cream
Ginger ice-cream

I am yet to taste the garlic ice cream.

Kanan said...

OOOH all that maggi talk reminded me of the 'sweet sour' flavored one. They don't make it any more. Like Goldspot, it's outdated now or rather more from 'hamara zamaana'.

Kanan said...

@Sneha, Yup, I too love maggi with bread. :) Tastes quite delicious but you gotta make sure you don't put too much water in it. I just read your comment about the sweet sour flavor. I still remember the logo - it was brown colored like the masala is red. Also, I remember once they had some promotion and they had maggi packs with international stamps in them. Those were the days... *sigh*

Boiled Egg's Yolk mixed with Dal !! And it tastes yummmm :)

My Dad eats Phulkas with a banana and bread with chudwa!!

AmitL said...

Curd on one toast, achaar on the other. And,sprinkled with bikaneri sev.Put them together and go 'crrrunch'.:)

Let me read the comments,now..I'm sure the recipes which come up will be good for a fun cookbook.And,Sol..don't forget-I want to know your weirdest food combo too.:)And,while we're on it,why don't you start participating in jeopardy?

SMM said...

Dal chawal sabzi and achar all mixed together with onion slices and then eat that like sabzi with roti...for some reason this used to be my staple diet in m hostel. Sounds gross now.

Rho Tau GWIS said...

Cheese burger made with the usual ingredients, PLUS beet root, pineapple and fried eggs.

gP said...

wait da minute...maagi in milk! oh my god! and maggi with bread.
ok i give up.

Arjun said...

lots of vodka in my chicken dish......!!

Solitaire said...

@ Arjun,

That's not soooo weird is it?

Solitaire said...

@ Ghost,

Come on! I am sure YOU have had weird food combinations..tell us!

Solitaire said...

@ Carolinagal,

WOW!! How did you think of that in the first place?

Solitaire said...

@ SMM,

No it doesn't! I eat khichdi just like that..ya I know the chapati part sounds a bit gross but still....

Solitaire said...

@ AmitL,

Oh oh! The winner of Jeopardy is asking me to tell me a weird combination I ate?

Hmm..ok!! Once my friend fed me chicken curry that had tomato ketchup, chocolate syrup, and orange juice in it!!

Solitaire said...

@ Vrij,

I too eat phulkas with bananas and sugar. I think a lot of Gujjus do that!! :)

I also eat phulkas with yoghurt and sugar!

Bread with chidwa bhi sounds familiar but EGG YOLKS IN DAAL!! That takes the prize!

Solitaire said...

@ Kanan,

I do not LOVE maggi with bread. I only love Maggi! But once I had gone to my aunt's house and everyone wanted to eat maggi but there was not enough! So they asked us to eat it with bread. That was my first and last time!

Sigh!! Do you remember Maggi in Capsica flavor as well as Prawn flavor. WOW! Loved it so much!!

--Kadhi with dhokla

Ok not so unusual!

--Parle-G biscuits sprayed with water :D (yummm)

I am sure someone who left their biscuits out in the rain discovered this.

--Bread crumbs ice-cream

There is actually a flavor like that?

--Ginger ice-cream

I love this one!! I always order it when I go to the Japanese restaurant.

Solitaire said...

@ Comfortably,

Sounds like Jain food. Was it?

ranga said...

The weirdest thing I have tried is vegetable upma and beetle bug!!!

I was having this really yummy upma at school that my mom made when a big bug flew straight into my mouth and I crunched it.

I am yet to reach the level of consciousness to be able to define the taste.

Solitaire said...

Tuhin said...

Apparently you can. They were doing some maintenance work and there was no water when I opened the tap. So I added some red wine to the dumplings instead :D

I somehow dont mind any combination - just think that its a different cuisine...

but here are few true life "lethal" doses
- grandmom once in state of hurry not wearing her spectacles served us rotis smeared with dishwashing powder instead of flour...had few bites before realizing
- sis of mine put salt in tea instead of sugar recently
- at a thanksgiving partee a potluck someone "baked" apple pie which basically was akin to charcoal and to make her happy we had to have a bite....uggggg...

Kanan said...

Sneha, I do remember the capsica flavor. Didn't even know about the prawn one. I don't eat anything that moves so. :P

--Cereal with juice "EEEKS!! How and why?"
Because there wasn't milk one day, and no one wanted to go out to buy it and well, hunger makes you do crazy things so. :)

--Banana with rajma (yup, there's a restaurant that serves this) "WHAT? WHERE?"
The place is called Cha Cha Cha in San Francisco, CA. The dish is called Fried Platanos Maduros in Tapas section.

--Parle-G biscuits sprayed with water :D (yummm) "I am sure someone who left their biscuits out in the rain discovered this."
Very true, it WAS the rain that did it. I love those "hawaai gayela" biscuits.

--Bread crumbs ice-cream "There is actually a flavor like that?"
It was home made and took a group of 10 people about one and a half hour still we couldnt figure it out. Eventually my aunt who had made it gave out the secret. It tasted quite good actually.

Btw, anyone tried sev with ketchup? It tastes very delicious. :)

ceedy said...

About my Ahmedabad:
Ahmedabad is quiet and very silent; this blasts have come as a surprise for Ahmedabadis...people are taken back with this sudden development...no one would have expected something like this (i have put my feelings & thoughts in my blog in rediffiland...google phantom ghost rediffiland)...but then this seems to more of a politics rather then terrorist activity.......i wonder whether this has anything to do with the elections and the confidence vote.......anyways, even if we talk of security concerns or measures to be in place, in a populated country like india where any technology starts with debugging mindsets...its difficult to implement security checks...you see there is a rise in lack of trust in recent years...

God Bless You :)

all dishes in this comment are fictional. Any resemblence to any morsel raw, cooked, hot, cold, frozen, fresh, stale, rotten, eaten, digested or no longer recognisable are purely coincidental.

1) Eno lentil curry (garnish on sizzler to taste)

2) Dink ladu (a marathi sweet made of a particluar type of edible gum) embedded with chewing gum. (The gum of the original dink ladu melts and can be swallowed. How will the brain and tongue deal with that along with a non soluble chewing gum? )

3) Tomato soup with chocolate cake instead of bread crumbs

4) Vanilla ice-cream in tomato (not chocolate) sauce.
